Colors Storytime

Toddlers are learning a lot of concepts, and storytime is a great time to explore them!

Books

Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek

One Red Dot by David A. Carter

See the Colors by Dawn Babb Prochovnic

Activities

“Color Shoes”

Reminiscent of Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, This little action rhyme is sure to get them moving!

“Color Shoes”
Stomping in my red shoes, red shoes, red shoes,
Stomping in my red shoes, here at storytime!

Running in my blue shoes, blue shoes, blue shoes,
Running in my blue shoes, here at storytime!

Sliding in my green shoes, green shoes, green shoes,
Sliding in my green shoes, here at storytime!

Twirling in my pink shoes, pink shoes, pink shoes,

Sitting in my white shoes, white shoes, white shoes,
Sitting in my white shoes, here at storytime!

Color Listening Game

Recite this rhyme many time, replacing “red” with different colors, encouraging children wearing each color to participate when it’s their turn.

Color Rhyme
Red, red is the color I see
If you’re wearing red, then show it to me!
Stand up, take a bow, turn around
Show me your red and sit back on the ground!

“Colors in the World”

An action rhyme about the colors around us.

“Colors in the World”
Blue is the Lake (point to the floor)
Yellow is the sun (point to the sky)
Silver are the stars when the day is done (wiggle fingers in the air)
Red is the apple (make circle with hands)
Green is the tree (raise arms over head like branches)
Brown is the cookie for you and me! (rub tummy)

“I Love Colors, Don’t Ask Me Why”

I’m not sure why, but I absolutely love this little song! I once made flannels for the different objects mentioned and stuck them on my board as we sang the song along with the music. I like the Kiboomers version best, but it is not available on YouTube at the moment.

“Bubble, Bubble, Pop”

One of my absolute favorite storytime songs and songs to sing to my daughter. Check out this Jbrary video for the tune. This song goes well will flannels or scarfs (swish, swish!) as well!

“Bubble, Bubble, Pop”
One little red fish
Swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
One little red fish
Swimming in the water
Bubble, bubble pop
…Two little blue fish
…Three little yellow fish
…Four little green fish
…Five little orange fish

Butterfly, Butterfly Hide and Seek

Towards the end of Petr Horacek’s book, the character looks behind different objects for the butterfly but doesn’t find it. I once made flannels of each hiding spot with a small butterfly flannel that I could stick behind them. We them would play hide and seek! Where are you butterfly!?
