There are many reasons I do not like holiday storytimes.
- They aren’t inclusive. They just aren’t. Storytime Underground has a great post here about why.
- They are restrictive. For me, personally, it is really hard to be creative when I am only allowed to do “Halloween” or “Christmas,” or, “Valentine’s Day.” I like a broader theme that allows for variety.
- Speaking of not being creative, you’d be doing holiday themes every week. Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, ohmygod I’m so tired of holiday crap. Where is your time for more creative storytimes?
So, if you want to ditch holiday storytimes, but still hanging on to your festive attitude, try these alternatives:
New Year’s
- Beginnings and endings
- Months of the year
Valentine’s Day
- Love
- Kindness
- Flowers
St. Patrick’s Day
- Green
- Rainbows
Easter
- Chickens
- Rabbits
- Spring
Mother’s / Father’s Day
- Love
- Kindness
- Families of all kinds
Independence Day
- Fireworks
- Parades
- Birthdays
Halloween
- Spooky stories
- Creeps & Monsters
Thanksgiving
- Fall
- Gratitude
Christmas
- Winter
- Cold Weather Animals
- Giving
- Thank you / you’re welcome
So there’s something to get you started. Forget about holiday storytimes! Broader, more inclusive themes are more fun anyway!
