Letter Knowledge Storytime

This storyitme is a part of the series I did on the 6 Early Literacy Skills.

My Introduction:

For the next 6 weeks of storytime, we will be focusing on the 6 early literacy skills.

Researchers say that these are the 6 skills children need to hone in order to be confident and ready to read and write.

Today’s skill is Letter Knowledge. “Letter knowledge” refers to a child’s ability to recognize letters and realize that words are made up of these characters. All of today’s stories are about the alphabet and the songs and activities are ones that I hope you will take home with you to further hone those letter knowledge skills!

Activities

ABC Animals

For this activity you need an alligator, bear, and cow puppet. I made little die-cut letter necklaces for each just for fun. We sang this song as a “Frere Jacques” call and response.

ABC Animals
Mr. Alligator, Mr. Alligator,
Don’t you bite!
Don’t you bite!
I will run away from you,
I will run away from you,
Out of sight,
Out of sight.

Baby bear, baby bear,
Time to hibernate,
Time to hibernate,
Go to sleep now,
Go to sleep now,
Don’t be late,
Don’t be late.

Careful cow, careful cow
Just say “moo!”
Just say “moo!”
Roam the field now,
Roam the field now,
See you soon.
See you soon.

“Sit Down ABCs”

A super fun little rhyme to get out some energy and call them back down!

“Sit Down ABCs”
A is for alligator – Chomp, Chomp, Chomp!
(open and close arms in front of you like alligator jaws)

B is for bouncing – Bop Bop Bop!
(hop around)

C is for circles around and around!
(turn in a circle)

D is for dizzy when we all sit down!
(sit down)

The Alphabet Monster

I actually didn’t get to do this activity even though I had it planned…. as happens sometimes when you are working with toddlers. I made small circle letters for all 26 letters of the alphabet. My plan was to hand them and have them “feed” my monster puppet the letters.
