In the Rain by Elizabeth Spurr

Reading for Early Literacy Tips

  • There are several opportunities for children to make gestures and follow actions in this book. Ask them to stomp, pat a mud pie, and/or put their arms above their head like a sun.
  • Read to emphasize the rhymes throughout the story.

Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit by Il Sung Na

Reading for Early Literacy Tips

  • This story offers plenty of opportunities for children to act out the story. Ask them to flap their wings like a bird, pretend to sleep, and “be still.”
  • Ask them to name certain items and animals that are only a part of illustrations. (like turtles, sheep, mice, etc)

“Run, Run Rabbit”

For a young crowd, sing this as a bounce song. For older toddlers, run in place and get those wiggles out before the next story!

“Run, Run Rabbit”
There once was a wolf.
A sly, silver wolf.
Who was looking for a rabbit.
Run, run rabbit
Run, run rabbit
Run, run rabbit fast as you can.
Don’t let him catch you
Don’t let him catch you
Don’t let him put you in the rabbit stew.

“Rainbow Soup”

This was a great activity. I made the rainbow pieces and fruits and vegetables per Storytime ABCs. During Storytime, I put the fruits and vegetables in plastic Halloween cauldron and pulled out the rainbow piece by piece until we had a full rainbow.

Take an apple
Put it in the pot
Stir it, stir it, stir it,
Stir it alot
Take it out now
What do you see?
The prettiest red You’ve ever seen!
